History Mystery Man
United States
Приєднався 4 гру 2016
Welcome to the home of the History Mystery Man. I go back and forth between auto racing and the maritime industry. Having worked in racing for decades, you'll find the most fascinating stories in American motorsports here...interviews with living legends and more. As a former Great Lakes Tug Captain, I've got the maritime industry covered too, including my fascination with the Edmund Fitzgerald. Occasionally, I wiggle in American history through the charm of small town America. I take the backroads, side roads and slow lanes in search of the best stories that exemplify the personality, character, grit and charm that lives across the American landscape.
If you know of a great story that looks like a good fit, feel free to reach out. Thanks for your support!

I've seen a lot of sprint car racing over my 64-plus years, but the Feature Event I saw recently at Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio was as good as it gets. On a brutal hot (mid-90s) afternoon, Cap Henry, Zeth Sabo and the open wheel winged warriors put on an amazing show for the fans sweltering in the early summer heat. Strong car counts in both the 410 and 305 divisions led to an amazing nig...

He also put down 3 Quick Time awards. Hi...

HMM, I'm late for the ride and Thanks for bringing me along! Great story about the Brother/Sister racing team. Keep Up the Amazing Work.
Thanks HMM Great Video as always.
met tanner at the jokersjackpot, hes a bit of a force of nature and a natural infront of the camera, full of energy too, and carly is very adept at setting up cars there is a real art, and a lot to know, they might not be brad sweet yet but i n time I think she will get there.
Good video thank you !
Great SCcars racing
I’m pretty sure that the Armco is in Toledo right now aka American valure
Another nice job of capturing the spirit the Knoxville Nationals. I enjoyed the interview with the top 3 finishers. I assume we'll soon get to hear at least part of your conversation with Steve Kinser. I like seeing Kyle Larson take the time to accommodate the autograph requests of many fans rather than just "hiding" between the security people and ignoring everyone. He always makes a good impression while at the track (including taking time to talk with you on a number of occasions).
Johnny Dirt their dad is the boss! 😂
What a cool racing family the Holmes are! I had the opportunity to meet the whole fam last weekend at Chico. I can see where the drive and passion come from just talking to “Momma” Holmes!!! Sometimes meeting your hero is underwhelming not the case with Tanner and crew chief Carly🏁
Once again, another fine video, Don! An interesting brother/sister race combo! I wonder if Tanner has ever considered racing USAC non wing cars.
Don't know...like to see it for sure. Great family! HMM
👍👍..neat story on the brother/ sister racing duo there ...I caught a glimpse of an engine there..not sure what it was 😂.. thanks for another one feller 👍👊
Thanks Elroy...you rock! HMM

The Legend Lives On ⚓
Love your work HMM from Australia
Thank you Ryan...so appreciated. Love hearing from my friends in Australia...HMM
👍
I have met this young man and his family in Knoxville this year at the nationals. For someone still learning his craft he is very professional off the track and very professional on the track. Go team Holmes from Australia
Great family. I wish I would have interviewed their mom too...she was super interesting. Thanks Gregory, for watching from Australia! HMM
Great interview, and Tanner is a very good driver.
He's got a bright future for sure...thanks for watching, William. HMM
Really enjoyed this video, love the mile dirt tracks. Sad that only this track and DuQuoin remain (at least in terms of hosting auto races). Although I heard the name, I never knew much about Trey Osborne. I had no idea he was 6'8"! Having been in some cars that the cage was dangerously close to the top of my head (and I'm only 6' with shoes on) i do worry about him, although the Silver Crown car he's running does seem to have some clearance. Regardless he does seem like a great kid and quite a wheelman. Hope he can go far. Nice to hear from Kody Swanson and Justin Grant as well, 2 very talented drivers that are big names in USAC but get very little mainstream attention. Also do you what happened with Schrader? Seen n the results and you mentioned in the video he made the race through the consi, but he never started the race. He was replaced by another driver, Mario Clouser but even he is listed as "NT" which I think means he didn't start?
Thanks Gregg...the Illinois State Fair races are so much fun to cover...you've got so much to work with. I can see great futures for both Trey and Briggs. Schrader made the race by earning the last transfer spot in the B-Main. Then, after the cars rolled off for the main event, I was hustling down to the inside rail in turns 3 and 4 when I saw Schrader riding his little two-wheeler in street clothes. So...I have no idea why Schrader didn't start the race.
No problem , thanks for info on Schrader. As far as I know the McQuinn team is relatively low budget, maybe they damaged an engine or had some other type of failure.
Really like to see someone put a deal together for these kids to race on our "Bullrings" down under and I don't mean just the Eastern seaboard or just in the West, some of our country tracks would love to be able to promote them as a drawcard.. Never say never.
I'll bet Tanner and Carly would love to travel down under for run your bullrings...love the idea! Thanks Michael...HMM
I really like the Holmes team and would like to see Carley back in a sprint car. She can drive. 👍🏼
I can tell that Carly wants to get back in a sprint car; I can see that happening soon...thanks Denny. HMM
I remember seeing Carly flip into the trees over the fence in her sprint car going for a WIN! So glad to see that she is doing fine after all that recovery.
Wow...didn't know that. I'd love to see Carly back in a sprint car. #GoGirl! Thanks for watching...HMM
Another excellent video HMM! Your videos are always good! Tanner and Carly are two very talented people! They’re both very respectful and humble. The world needs more folks like that! I hope they both make it big time!! Thanks for sharing!!
You're welcome Denny...thanks for watching! HMM
I lived in Chicago my entire life and always said i didn't want to die there. We bought a house in 2016 out in the country about 15 miles southeast of Orleans. This entire area is beautiful and Orleans is wonderful. Everyone is so friendly and wonderful, such a welcome change from a huge city. You really need to come during the Dogwood Festival!
Thanks for sharing your story here Julie...super cool. So are you saying you're glad you left Chicago for small town America? That'd be a no-brainer for me. I love that area you're now living in...and yes, Orleans rocks! The Dogwood Festival sounds like a great idea! Madison, Indiana is also amazing! Thanks for taking the time to watch! HMM
@HistoryMysteryMan yes, left Chicago after we visited a friend in Paoli and began looking for a house in the area. We were very lucky and able to find a new build on 5 acres for a fraction of what a house costs in the Chicago area. It's just so quiet and peaceful here. Yes, Madison is beautiful. Have you been to Cataract Falls in Spencer, IN??? Another beautiful place. And of course the French Lick and West Baden resorts are gorgeous... the views from the Pete Dye golf course are incredible too. We just go driving around to see all the beautiful countryside. It was a total no brainer for us.
Excellent Family. Committed Racers, all love it and it shows. Carly is being too modest, she is the Car Queen. And she drives just as well as Tanner, had a bad crash last year, while leading the race, hurt her back. Then a Cart race broke her foot, no racing luck yet. Been following Tanner for 4 years, he is a gentleman on and off track. Needs support. They are great people.
Great family for sure! I talked at length with their mom...she was awesome. I wish I would have been recording it to include it in the video. Great podium finish last night in the High Limit show in Oregon. Thanks for watching...HMM
I always learn something watching your show! Thanks HMM!
You're welcome Leroy; thanks for your support! HMM
Some folks couldn't find their way out of a sanican let alone make a respectful comment. Keep on doing it Tanner.
Great commentary! Thanks for sharing it here, Michael. HMM
Dude tears up equipment on a regular basis, and Since July the dude has only managed to make an A main 3times. Maybe he should use all that money he’s burning through and use it for college.
I can't think of a bigger waste of money than college. Keep on keeping on Tanner...you rock!
Cool stuff. I know tanner’s on track results are still a work in progress but I’ve always appreciated his hustle off the track. I don’t know that anyone works harder in that regard. UA-cam, Facebook, finding sponsors. I wonder how many hours of work goes into making just one of his 15 min videos? 10+ hours?
Tanner's off-track marketing is incredible. I know he works super hard at it...he literally never stops. A 15-minute video for me would be at least 20 hours...thanks! HMM
Not to tear Tanner down , but Tanner had the potent ride in the Shark racing team towards the end of last season for enough races to do something and did very little . Tanner should return to his home tracks and win races and some championships to build up his resume to attract some solid sponsors or to turn the heads of some traveling series owners heads . At this rate he will only be seen as an “ also ran “ ! More local wins , some championships and he might find himself in a few years in another top flight seat .
Tanner sure looked top-flight last night at the Douglas County Dirtrack with a podium finish in the High Limit show against some of the best. I see a bright future for Tanner and Carly. HMM
Great young man and great family !!!
Absolutely...I wish I would have interviewed their mom too...she's very interesting and well-spoken. HMM
@HistoryMysteryMan spoke with her at Tulare, nice lady...
Tanner & Carly seem like very nice people . Thanks again Don .
You're welcome Wayne; thanks again. HMM
Good video and story
Thanks again, Gary. HMM
Tanner has come along really well the last couple of years. That team works their butt's off. Carly is pretty good driver herself. She was really starting to get fast when she had her wreck not of her doing.
When I first saw ricky race at putnamville i told my wife "That dude has big ballz".
Heck of a wheelman for sure...thanks! HMM
Thank you history mystery man and captain.
You're welcome Dana...super glad to hear from you again. HMM
Carly can drive well she has win in a limited sprint before. And is super fast in outlaw karts. Been watching Holmes for years.
I'm hearing from a lot of folks how good Carly is in a racecar. Hope she can get fully healed up and make a comeback. Thanks for watching...HMM
Well I just binge watch all your videos Don I've been a little absent this year working two jobs 7 days a week and I decided to take a couple days off and binge watch UA-cam videos I haven't seen for a while. Still doing a great job buddy.
Thanks! I'm glad to have you back. Don't feel any obligation to watch; your work is more important...but I'm grateful you're here anytime. HMM
The young guns held their own.
Absolutely! Thanks again, Greg. HMM
Great video. It is encouraging to see young people who understand hard work= success.
Man...you can say that again. Thanks Bob...HMM
Great video HMM! I'm now a Tanner & Carly Holmes fan.
You and me both, brother...thanks again. HMM
Thanks again Don ! I'll admit I don't follow Tanner Holmes, but I will be paying more attention, going forward. Thanks for the shots of the track prep. Look forward to more of your take on the Nationals.
Thanks Robert! More Knoxville stuff on the way. Could you stand one on the downtown Knoxville square or will that put people to sleep? HMM
Thank you HMM, another great video. Love these interviews with up and coming drivers and tire specialist. Here's hoping they continue there racing. Great job!
Thanks Roger. I can see bright futures for both Tanner and Carly. Always appreciate your commentary! HMM
Well it used to be at N.Y, State Moody Mile but politics destroyed that, since 2016 its at Oswego just up the road, they cover the 5/8 mile with clay, all the big names are there, 1st or @nd week in Oct, they run the Mods down Main street to kick it off, its a good party, hope to see you there!
im sorry 1st or 2nd week in Oct!
That actually sounds like a lot of fun. I've always wanted to cover the Big Blocks...thanks! HMM
This guy fun to watch he was the show at Lawrenceburg speedway dude made that race exiting then did it again for Ohio speed week again making it exciting
Fun to watch on the track and handles himself very well off the track too. Thanks for watching, Scott. HMM
Just got back from the dirt cup. No doubt Kyle is the best, but watch Cory Day. This 18 year old is the real deal and wins $100,000 at the cup.
No doubt on Corey Day. Hendrick Motorsports has their eyes on him. He's going to be a superstar. Thanks again, William. HMM
I'm related to an engineer who was on the AURTHUR M ANDERSON when the EDMUND FITZGERALD went down
Really?! That's super cool; thanks for sharing that info here. How are you related to this person? Thanks...HMM
@HistoryMysteryMan My Godmother's Husband's Grandfather Her husband is Aric
He told me the story I would love to meet you if I can
Could you make a video of the AURTHUR B HOMER Sister Ship of the EDMUND FITZGERALD 🇺🇸
That's a great suggestion. I'll ask Captain Darrell about that...thanks. HMM
The James Carruthers is the holy Grail of great Lakes ship wreck discoveries
Yes...and an in-depth movie would be super interesting. Thanks again, Gregory. HMM
Has the James Carruthers ever been found?? He showed it on the map like it was found. But I've never heard of that ship being located
As best as I understand, the Carruthers has not been found, but I believe it's known where it is. Anyone else? Thanks...HMM
That would be special to go up to whitefish point for the 50th anniversary of the Big Fitz.
It absolutely would. And if they'll have me, I'm going. I'll bet it will be well attended. Wonder what they'll do with all the overflow? Thanks for watching...HMM
Wow HMM. Really the next best thing to being there! Unfortunate Kyle couldn’t finish last night’s race. So close it had to hurt a bit, but a successful year despite that bummer. Thanks for the visit to Knoxville!🏁
You're welcome. Yeah...he just can't catch a break on the Speedways. His car was plenty fast enough, but again caught up in the Big One. Great to see Harrison Burton get his first win though, and the Wood Brothers...their 100th...cool story.
